What Is The PLAB Exam?

The Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board (PLAB) exam is an assessment for doctors who have qualified overseas and wish to practice medicine in the United Kingdom.


It is designed to ensure that these international medical graduates have the necessary knowledge and skills to practice safely and effectively within the UK's healthcare system.


There are two parts to this PLAB Exam - PLAB 1 and PLAB 2. You need to pass both parts to get the license to practice as a doctor in the UK.

PLAB Exam Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible to enter the PLAB Exam, you must have have acquired the following criteria and requirements:

Qualifications

The medical graduate’s primary qualifications must be recognised by an institution listed in the World Health Organization Directory of Medical Schools.

English Proficiency

Candidates are required to have taken the IELTS exam and achieved a minimum overall score of 7, with a minimum score of 7.0 in each of the four language modules.

Experience

The candidates must have completed a minimum of 12 months of postgraduate clinical experience at a teaching hospital.

Procedure for PLAB 

To complete the procedure of taking the PLAB exam and becoming a registered doctor in UK, a few steps need to be followed.

  1. Complete EPIC Verification

Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) Electronic Portfolio of International Credentials (EPIC) verification may be necessary to authenticate your primary medical qualification.

 

Another option is the workplace-based assessment which requires the candidate to be registered with the Medical Board of Australia before applying directly to a WBA provider.

 2. English Proficiency

​

Candidates are required to demonstrate proficiency in English by taking an approved English language test, such as IELTS, and achieving the required scores.

 3. Take PLAB 1

​

After scoring the desired marks in IELTS, international medical graduates must pass PLAB 1, a written examination consisting of multiple-choice questions that assess their medical knowledge.


 4. Take PLAB 2

​

After clearing PLAB 1 and completing EPIC Verification, candidates need to pass PLAB 2, which is an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) assessing clinical and communication skills in various scenarios.

 5. Apply for GMC Registration

​

Once both PLAB exams are successfully completed, candidates can apply to the General Medical Council (GMC) for registration, allowing them to practice medicine in the UK, subject to meeting other requirements.
