What Is The AMC Exam?

The demand for qualified medical doctors outnumbers the supply in Australia. Australia invites MBBS doctors and MD doctors from around the world to become registered doctors in Australia. To become a doctor in Australia, you need to crack the AMC exam. The Australian Medical Council assesses the skills and expertise of the doctors seeking registration in Australia. Both the AMC MCQ exam and the AMC Clinical exam are administered by Pearson VUE and can be taken from the Pearson VUE test centres around the world. Once the exam is completed successfully, you may apply for a work/PR visa.

AMC Exam Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible to enter the AMC Exam, you must have have acquired the following criteria and requirements:

Medical Degree

A university medical degree (MBBS/MD/MS) obtained after a minimum of four and a half years at a medical university recognized by the Australian Medical Council.

Internship

Completion of the compulsory rotatory internship after attaining the degree.

Registration

Full and unrestricted registration in your home country or country of training without withdrawal of the registration. 

Procedure for AIMS 

To complete the procedure of taking the AMC exam and becoming a registered doctor in Australia, a few steps need to be followed.

 1. Pathway for Registration

The candidate should choose a pathway for registration with the Medical Board of Australia. Following are the pathways. 

  • Standard Pathway

  • Competent Authority Pathway

  • Specialist Pathway

  • Short-Term Training in a Medical Specialty Pathway.


 2. Creation of AMC portfolio

​

After creating this portfolio, the candidate can confirm if he/ she is eligible for the AMC exam.

 3. AMC MCQ Exam

​

The AMC MCQ exam is a computer-administered test that assesses the knowledge of the principles and practice of medicine in the fields of general practice, internal medicine, pediatrics, psychiatry, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology.

  4. AMC Clinical Exam/Workplace-based Assessment

​

The AMC clinical exam is conducted to evaluate clinical skills in medicine, surgery, obstetrics, gynecology, pediatrics and psychiatry along with the candidate’s ability to communicate with patients, their families and other health workers. 
 

Another option is the workplace-based assessment which requires the candidate to be registered with the Medical Board of Australia before applying directly to a WBA provider.

 5. English Proficiency

​

At the time of visa processing, proficiency in the English language is essential. This can be done by taking English proficiency tests such as IELTS/PTE/OET.
Adequate scores in these exams can lead to a smoother visa application process
